Good Reads for 2014

At the beginning of each year I do my best to plan my reading the list for the following twelve months. The list may change as the year goes on but I must have a plan. I've found that I don't accomplish much at all without any goals to shoot for. Here's my 2014 reading list so far :

Currently:
(This list contains affiliate links. Thanks for supporting my blog.)

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott:

  • With its "instructions on writing and life" this book is a great resource for writers but also applicable to non-writers.

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007A4SDCG/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B007A4SDCG&linkCode=as2&tag=jobru-20
  • This is a must-read for all creatives, entrepreneurs and anyone wanting to live their dreams and fight the enemy of Resistance.

Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HEN3K0I/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HEN3K0I&linkCode=as2&tag=jobru-20
  • Goldberg helps you "free the writer within" and unlearn all the rules about writing.

Fiction:

The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kid:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000W5MHX6/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000W5MHX6&linkCode=as2&tag=jobru-20
  • This book is a quick read and not easy to put down. I'm nearly done with it but I will warn you that it's not  lighthearted and deals with some difficult subjects.

The Land of Elyon series by Patrick Carman:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0439898889/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0439898889&linkCode=as2&tag=jobru-20
  • This series is in the same vein as Lord of the Rings but is much easier reading. This time around Jason and I are reading them together.

To Re-read:

Something Beautiful for God by Malcolm Muggeridge:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060660430/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0060660430&linkCode=as2&tag=jobru-20
  • This is "the classic account of Mother Teresa's journey into compassion." Based on conversations between her and the author, this book is a unique perspective on this incredible woman.

A Million Little Ways by Emily P. Freeman:

  • Even if you read nothing else this year, read this book. I guarantee it will change your life as you learn to "live fully right where you are."

Next on my list:

Notes from a Blue Bike by Tsh Oxenreider:

  • This is the story of one women's quest to bring the simplicity and the slow pace of life lived abroad to the Western World. I can't wait to read how she does it.

Wonderstuck by Margaret Feinberg:

  •  This ones on my list because I don't live this way, but I really want to.

Kisses from Katie by Katie J. Davis:

  • This is the true story of an eighteen-year-old girl who goes overseas, ends up moving to Uganda, and eventually adopts 13 children.

That's my list so far. Clearly I'm too serious and need more fiction in my life. I'd love to hear what's on your reading this this year in the comments below. Also please be sure to add any fiction recommendations you may have for me.

Happy reading!

  1. Great list! I've read the first three and A Million Little Ways. Notes from a Blue Bike is going on my list now too!

I try to alternate fiction, various how to (business/motivation/cooking), and biography so I'm reading fairly evenly in each genre. However, when hooked on a series (like the Martin books last year) that goes out the window.

So far this year, I've read:
Brene Brown's The Gifts of Imperfection,
    Booklife,
    Lexi Maxxwell's Divorced,
    Write. Publish. Repeat.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (to the boys)
    1,000 White Women
and Jeff Goins' The In-Between (which you would love!)

Currently reading, Heat (which is a journalist's account of cooking for Mario Batali)
    Sitting on my to-read pile:
    The Artful Edit
    The John Lennon Letters
    A Culinary Traveler in Tuscany
Baldwin's If Beale's Street Could Talk
    Sacred Pleasure

As I look back over this, I realize I may have a bit of a problem! :)

    1. Renia, this is fabulous! Thanks for sharing. I've meant to add Jeff Goins' book to my list. Thanks for the reminder. I haven't read that particular book by Brene' Brown but I want to. I also want to read An Everlasting Meal and some other food writing this year. Plus as new books are released I keep adding them to the list.
